We held the Pinery Fall Classic on November 1st this year. It was quite an adventure! The Fall Classic (a.k.a. the Pinery Provincial Park Road Race) is usually held the Sunday after Thanksgiving. This year, Mother Nature conspired against us, in the form of snow; heavy, wet, clinging snow that fell all weekend, leading to myriad downed branches, power outages and unsafe conditions. The day before the event, we made the decision to cancel and reschedule the run. This proved to be quite the task! Runners (346 of them) had to be notified, refunds needed to be issued, volunteers needed to be re-scheduled. Porta-potties, which had already been delivered, had to be picked up again, then re-delivered. The list goes on and on.
It all worked out, though. Although our numbers were fewer on November 1st, all participants seemed to enjoy walking, running or zooming on wheel-chairs on the trails and roads. Conditions were lovely. It was brisk and sunny, the lake cooperated for beach runners, and the Fall colours were splendid. Participants ranged from serious runners to people who came out to enjoy a brisk walk on the 2K, 5K and 10K routes as well as the 4.8 K trail route.
We would like to thank our wonderful, loyal volunteers, many of whom come out year after year to help. Thank you to our sponsors. Mike and Terri Rahn of No Frills are major contributors: they donate funds for shirts as well as organize and bring the food and water. We so appreciate their constant support. Rotary is another regular sponsor. Thank you as well to Runners Choice, Oakwood Resort, Mountain Equipment Co-op and to the many local businesses who donated door prizes. We couldn't do it without you!
